Tragically, the situation in Cyprus mirrors the savage treatment of stray cats and dogs seen in Greece. The issue is further exacerbated by the staggering number of 1.5 million cats compared to 1.2 million Cypriots. Similar to Greece, the acts of cruelty are particularly barbaric and disturbingly common, revealing a deeply ingrained cultural hatred toward animals. One horrifying comment sent to the Cyprus Mail referred to cats as "vile vermin," which reflects the pervasive attitude and treatment of not only cats, but animals in general.

The barbarity is also widespread, involving individuals across all ages and social strata, from young children to the elderly, suggesting a profound moral and ethical degradation within Cypriot society.

Cats and dogs in Cyprus are often subjected to the following sadistic acts:

  • Dragging animals behind cars or motorcycles

  • Beheading

  • Amputating limbs

  • Castrating with knives

  • Hanging animals

  • Leaving animals tied to trees to die

  • Skinning animals alive

  • Disposing of kittens and puppies in garbage bins, the ocean, or off cliffs

  • Poisoning

  • Mutilation

  • Deliberate starvation

  • Abandoning animals in desolate areas

  • Severe beatings

  • Repeated kicking

  • Crushing

  • Placing firecrackers in animals' mouths, taping them shut, and igniting them

  • Burning animals alive, whether by setting them on fire or placing them in ovens

  • Pouring oil or petrol over animals

  • Stabbing

  • Shooting

It is unconscionable that such depraved acts towards animals occur anywhere, let alone in a European Union country like Cyprus, which is expected to uphold civilized standards. Furthermore, the almost total lack of enforcement and punishment is deeply disheartening as failure to hold animal abusers accountable only perpetuates such callous cruelty.

Urgent action and worldwide awareness are desperately needed to stop these heinous acts and bring justice for these vulnerable animals. Similar to Greece, there is little media coverage, leaving the global community largely unaware of these ongoing atrocities.
